The Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation (MWRI) has officially signed a $299,000 agreement with the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS) to procure essential flood mitigation supplies for vulnerable communities in Jonglei State, specifically targeting Bor and Fangak counties, as well as the Greater Pibor Administrative Area.
This contract is part of the World Bank-financed Regional Climate Resilience Project (RCRP), which aims to enhance the capacity of local communities to respond to and mitigate the impacts of flooding. The supplies to be procured include critical tools such as shovels, spades, sandbags, and fuel for operating speedboats and water pump generators. These items are essential for supporting ongoing flood response efforts and enhancing the resilience of affected communities.
During the contract signing, Hon. Peter Mahal Dhieu Akat, Undersecretary of MWRI, emphasized the importance of timely action. “We have a longstanding partnership with UNOPS, and it is crucial that we expedite the procurement process to help those who have been devastated by recent floods,” he stated. His call for urgency reflects the pressing need for effective flood response in the region.
The UNOPS Project Coordinator echoed this sentiment, reaffirming the agency’s commitment to the mission. “Our team is dedicated to ensuring that the procurement process runs smoothly. We have extensive expertise in this field and are ready to assist the communities impacted by flooding,” he remarked.
This agreement marks a pivotal step toward building long-term flood resilience in South Sudan, demonstrating the collaborative efforts of MWRI and UNOPS in addressing the challenges posed by climate change. As the project moves forward, it aims not only to provide immediate relief but also to lay the groundwork for sustainable flood management practices in the future.
