The Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation Signs contract agreement with UNOPS to Procure Flood Mitigation Supplies.

 

The Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation (MWRI) of the Republic of South Sudan and the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS) have signed a key agreement to procure essential flood mitigation supplies for the counties of Bor and Fangak in Jonglei State, and Pibor in the Greater Pibor Administrative Area.

The agreement, valued at over $299,000 (two hundred and ninety-nine thousand US dollars), is part of the World Bank-financed Regional Climate Resilience Project (RCRP) for Eastern and Southern Africa, which is being implemented by MWRI. UNOPS will oversee the procurement and timely delivery of flood mitigation supplies, coordinating closely with the Ministry and local authorities. This effort will continue through February 2025.

Remarks from Hon. Peter Mahal Dhieu Akat (MWRI), the undersecretary who represented the ministry said the ministry had history with UNOPS in partnering with the MWRI and that the support from the ministry to the people affected with the flood although it is small but important. He urged UNOPS to expediate the process to respond and address the flood that has already devasted the lands.

On his part, the Project Coordinator for UNOPS said UNOPS is committed to the assignment (procurement of flood items) for the affected communities as the agency is an expertise in the field of procurement.

This agreement represents another step forward in addressing South Sudan’s vulnerability to floods while building long-term resilience in the most affected communities
