Hydrology and warning
National flood preparedness is a standing MWRI programme. When Lake Victoria and the wider Nile system rise, the Ministry issues public guidance and coordinates with states and humanitarian partners to reduce harm to downstream communities.
In 2024 the Ugandan authorities released excess water from Lake Victoria at about 2,400 cubic metres per second. Minister Pal Mai Deng briefed the public on the flood risk and called for immediate preparedness among households, local authorities and aid organisations.
The work covers monitoring, briefing notes, and coordination so communities along the Nile and floodplains can act before water arrives.
